Chapter Eleven
Sara rose early the next morning, her conversation with Crow still on her mind. The fact sheâd just learned his real name only underscored how little she knew about the man.
Today sheâd remedy that oversight. Heâd asked for the day off. Sheâd decided to spend it with him.
It could be a battle, but Sara had come prepared. Sheâd left her hair down in loose waves and worn the black stretch tube dress that heâd admired soon after he started working for her. Even her makeup had gotten extra attention this morning. Though sheâd never been really big on resorting to feminine wiles, Crow was a tough opponent, and difficult times called for sacrifices.
Like being up and ready to go at 6:00 a.m.
Sara knew from past experience that Crow didnât usually leave the house before seven, but she wasnât taking any chances.
The coffeepot beeped and Sara forced herself from her chair. Hopefully the extrastrong brew would jump-start her morning. She poured herself a mugful, added a couple of sugar cubes and returned to the table to read the paper.
By the time Crow sauntered into the kitchen, looking incredibly handsome in a pair of black running pants and a T-shirt, Sara had drank three cups and was finally wide awake.
He stopped in the doorway. His gaze shifted to the clock. âWhatâs the matter?â
âNothing.â Sara took a deep breath. Sheâd decided to use the direct approach. âI thought weâd spend the day together.â Sara took a sip of coffee and peered at him over the rim of her cup. âWonât that be fun?â
âIt could be, but itâs not going to happen.â Crow took the seat at the table opposite her. âMy dayâs booked solid. Iâve got a bunch of errandsââ
âPerfect,â Sara interrupted. âI love to run errands. I can keep you company.â
âWhy?â he asked bluntly.
âBecause I want to spend time with you.â
âWeâre together all the time.â He looked at her as if sheâd gone utterly mad. âIâm your bodyguard. My job is to be with you. Remember?â
âOh, thatââ Sara waved a dismissive hand ââthat doesnât count. Thatâs work.â
âAnd what will this be?â
From his stony expression, Sara had to admit that her plan was off to a rocky start. Impulsively she reached across the table and grabbed his hand. Surprisingly he didnât pull away.
Emboldened, she rubbed her fingers lightly across the top of his hand. âItâll be fun. Câmon, Crow. Be my friend. Let me come along. Please.â
He stared for a long moment. Finally, just when sheâd about given up hope, his expression softened. âOkay, you can come. But itâll be boring, not fun. Donât say I didnât warn you.â
âItâll be great.â Sara flashed him her brightest smile. âJust you wait and see.â
